Region of Valencia

The origins of present day Valencia date back to the former Kingdom of Valencia (Regne de València), which came into existence in the 13th century. James I of Aragon led Christian conquest and colonization of the existing Islamic taifas with Aragonese and Catalan people in 1208 and founded the Kingdom of Valencia as a third independent country within the Crown of Aragon in 1238.

ALICANTE

Alicante
The area around Alicante has been inhabited for over 7000 years, with the first tribes of hunter gatherers moving down gradually from Central Europe between 5000 and 3000 BC. Some of the earliest settlements were made on the slopes of Mount Benacantil. By 1000 BC Greek and Phoenician traders had begun to visit the eastern coast of Spain, establishing small trading ports and introducing the native Iberian tribes to the alphabet, iron and the pottery wheel. By the 3rd century BC, the rival armies of Carthage and Rome began to invade and fight for control of the Iberian Peninsula. The Carthaginian general Hamilcar Barca established the fortified settlement of Akra Leuka (Greek: A??? ????a, meaning “White Mountain” or “White Point”), where Alicante stands today.

VALENCIA

Valencia
I live in Valencia for about 22 years. The first time I visited downtown with my first reflex (provided by a great friend now deceased) left me dumbfounded with the amount of people and things that went around, through the large eye. These photographs captured the daily life of Valencia: passersby, tourists, students… citizens performing various activities.
